Mobility Scooters, Disability Scooters and Disabled Scooters
Mobility scooters have revolutionised life for people in the 21st Century. Now for a relatively low price, people with walking difficulties can regain their mobility with a product that is modern, practical and stylish. All Scooters are safe and very easy to use. The braking system is fully automatic and there are no gears.
Mobility scooters are also referred to as Disability Scooters or Disabled Scooters. For the clarity and continuity on this Website we refer to Disability Scooter and Disabled scooters as Mobility Scooters.
Mobility scooters fall into 3 main categories:
1) Portable or Boot scooters fold down and come apart quickly and easily to put into the boot of your car. These are by far the most popular type of scooter now with the larger portable scooters having ranges of over 20 miles.
2) Pavement Mobility Scooters have a range up to typically 25 miles, often better seating than portable scooters, some have suspension for a smoother ride and most have better ground clearance. They are designed for the user to travel around the locality to do their shopping, visit the doctor etc but are only permitted on the pavement.
3) Finally there are the Class 3 Road Scooters. These can have a range up to 35 miles, will take weights up to 35 stone and are fully road legal. The main use of a Road Mobility scooter is in essence to replace the car on shorter distances. They are as you can imagine far more economical than cars and most users report saving hundreds of pounds on taxi fares.
Electric Wheelchairs, Powerchairs and Manual Wheelchairs
In essence Electric Wheelchairs and Powerchairs are the same product. They are Wheelchairs, powered by batteries, driven by electric motors and joystick controlled either by an attendant or the user.
The industry tends to describe Wheelchairs that look like manual Wheelchairs but with the addition of two electric motors as Electric Wheelchairs. This is as opposed to Powerchairs that look more modern, have stylish colourful body panels, different seating systems and can be mid-wheel, rear wheel or front wheel drive.
Unlike mobility scooters, Powerchairs are designed for indoor use, outdoor use or a combination of both. They have special seating options for people who need upper body support and other special seating needs. They are operated by joystick controllers, head controls and suck and puff units depending on the needs of the user. Powerchairs and Electric Wheelchairs also come in versions that are fully configurable for the users needs including fully adjustable leg and foot rests and powered leg raisers.
Powerchairs can be used on the pavement or the road and are then fitted with lights, a horn, indicators and suspension and can travel at speeds up to 8mph.
Manual Wheelchairs come in two types, transit or self propelled. The transit wheelchairs are pushed by an attendant in contrast to the self propelled which are propelled by the wheels by the user. Manual Wheelchairs come with all the seating options of Powerchairs including leg rest options. There are many types available including lightweight aluminium Wheelchairs which are very popular because of their weight.
